Artist Statement: 

     Being the odd one out demonstrates the mind of someone who is neurodivergent. Most are unaware of what it is like to have a differently functioning brain, or perhaps the way it is wired. Disability or being on the spectrum such as autism is arguably not the appropriate term to describe someone else. Instead, neurodiversity would be the preferred term among those considered normal or neurotypical by the status quo. ​

     As someone who is considered “neurodiverse,” most people don’t understand the viewpoint nor will they ever. It always has been a pet peeve for a neurotypical to try to speak for someone who’s neurodiverse. The story and viewpoint should be told by those who are actually wired differently than those who aren’t. The work gives the diverse and focal points of how I envision my works throughout this artist residency. Oftentimes, neurodivergent individuals work a bit and learn differently to achieve their countless goals. 

     Throughout the residency, I used my neurodiversity to bring to life work that I’m thinking about with the mindset of an oddly wired person. There are strengths that most people don’t recognize when it comes to a job or work. There are far more strengths than weaknesses with someone who is neurodiverse. Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is through creativity that likely doesn’t work for others. Is there really anyone on this planet who is perfect and normal? Maybe the viewer might be neurodivergent and they aren’t aware.
